VARHRAN V, SASSANIAN AR DRACHM, 420 - 438 C.E.

Gobl I/2, Near Mint State, 29.6mm, 4.18 grams, RD - Rayy Mint

Obverse: Bust of Varhran V to right, wearing mural crown with korymbos set on crescent, inscription around, dotted border

Reverse: Fire altar with head of Varhran V to right on its shaft, flanked by two attendants, dotted border

Well struck example of an interesting variety with a somewhat unusual portrait!

Varhran V, also known as Bahram Gor was the son of Yazdegard I (Izgader Malka mentioned in the Talmud) According to Sassanian/Pahlavian literature Yazdegard married Shushandukt the daughter of the Exilarch Huna (resh galuta), technically making Varhran V a Jewish Sassanian King. His proposed genealogy can be seen here
