PAIR OF ANCIENT ROMAN BONE GAMING DICE, CIRCA. 1st - 3rd CENTURY C.E.

Very Good Condition, Intact, 8.30mm and 7.98mm

A nice pair of Roman bone dice which were commonly used by soldiers for recreation in the field.

The ancient Mishnaic writings also refers to these as "Kubia", similar to the word cubes. Indeed in Greek, dice are spelled κύβοι.  The "Aruch" a Jewish medieval commentator, refers to them as "cubes used for gaming". Interestingly the famous Rashi describes "Kubia" as pieces of bone used for games. Indeed, the Roman dice were primarily made of bone, as in this pair of dice.
