YEHUD AR QUARTER GERAH, UNDER PTOLEMY II, CIRCA. EARLY 3rd CENTURY B.C.E.
Hendin 6081, TJC 32, Near Extremely Fine, minor edge chipping, 6.9mm, .15 gram
Obverse: Diademed head of Ptolemy I to rightReverse: Eagle standing on a thunderbolt to left, YHDH (for Yehud or Yehuda (Judaea)) upward in left field
A quality specimen and very SHARP to the eye! (Notoriously hard to photograph a coin this small and detailed). This is the YHD type that has four letters YHDH instead of the usual three. Ptolemy II was also the ruler who commissioned 70 Jewish elders to translate the Torah into the Septuagint.
