"COIN OF THE MONTH" - HEROD THE GREAT AE PRUTAH
Hendin 6222, TJC 65, About Extremely Fine, repatinated, 14.6mm, 1.01grams, Struck Circa. 40 - 4 B.C.E.
Obverse: Anchor, Greek inscription King Herod around
Reverse: War galley with oars, ram and aphlaston to left
A CHOICE specimen and one of the very finest we have seen!
The Herod War Galley prutah is underated for its rarity. (The Archelaus probably being more common) Perhaps less than a couple dozen of this type have been offered at auction in the last 20 - 25 years. This specimen, a private purchase is the FINEST and most COMPLETE we could find. The planchets used to produce these coins were actually smaller than the dies used to strike them, so that the full inscription is never seen.
