ASKELON (ASHKELON), TRAJAN AE

Sofaer 116, GBC 4th ed. - 827var (date), About Very Fine, 18mm, 6.03 grams, Struck Circa. 116/117 C.E.

Obverse: Laureate head of Trajan to right, CEBACTOC around

Reverse: Phanebal standing facing, holding harpa in right and small shield and palm in left, date KC (year 220 - 116/117 C.E.) to left, ACKA to right

Although the larger coins of Ascalon are quite common for Trajan, the small (18-19mm) modules are quite rare! There were NO examples on acsearch for this date, although we found another clearly dated IC example here.

It is an excellent example for someone who wants to try their hand at cleaning, being covered by only original simple dirt, so far as we can tell.
