HASMONEAN, JOHN (YOCHANAN) HYRCANUS AE PRUTAH, "BROCKAGE"

Very Fine, 13.7mm, 2.21 grams

Obverse: Brockage of double cornucopia adorned with ribbons, pomegranate between horns

Reverse: Double cornucopia adorned with ribbons, pomegranate between horns

A nice and SCARCE deeply incised brockage error of a Hasmonean Prutah, John Hyrcanus - Alexander Jannaeus.

A brockage occurs when the previously struck coin remains stuck in the die and is not removed. When a new coin is struck, one side is struck normally with the die and the other is struck with the other coin. The previous coin's relief creates an incuse image on the new planchet.
