An important set of Holocaust memorablia.

Theresienstadt (Terezín) served a dual purpose under the Nazis: it was presented as a “model” ghetto to deceive the international community, while in reality functioning as a labor and transit camp. They created an illusion of self-governance by appointing a Jewish Council of Elders (Judenrat) and even created a currency for circulation. The Council was responsible to run the internal services of the camp and carry out Nazi orders. The Nazi's objective was to use the camp to stage a façade of humane conditions for Red Cross inspections and film footage. Behind this deception, overcrowding, starvation, disease, and brutal treatment were rampant. Forced labor was a central part of life in Theresienstadt. Prisoners were compelled to work in a wide range of jobs that supported the camp’s operation and, indirectly, the Nazi war effort. Most prisoners were eventually deported to extermination camps such as Auschwitz, even those that had "starred" in the propaganda films.
