PONTIUS PILATE AE PRUTAH, PREFECT UNDER TIBERIUS
Hendin 6371/72 var., Good Fine, 15.3mm, 1.63 grams, Struck Circa. 30 - 32 C.E.
Obverse: Date LI (missing Z or H) within wreath
Reverse: TIBEPIOY KAICAPOC around littus
An unusual variant. The coin is double struck giving the appearance of a retrograde littus. While possible, it seems more probable to us that it is an artifact of the double strike.
On the date side, it appears that the last letter of the date is completely omitted. When properly oriented (direction of the wreath) it appears as a "C" but when oriented otherwise it appears as LI (see photo). There are some artifacts on the surface that can either be a retrograde "Z" (for LIZ) or part of the wreath. An interesting coin to study!
