PONTIUS PILATE AE PRUTAH, PREFECT UNDER TIBERIUS

Hendin 6370 var, TJC 331 var, Good Very Fine, contrast added, 16.9mm, 1.98 grams

Obverse: Inscription TIBEPIOY KAICAPOC LIC (of Tiberius Caesar, year 16 = 29/30 C.E.); simpulum (ladle)

Reverse - Inscription IOY^IA KAICAPOC (Julia the Queen); three bound ears of grain, the outer ones droop

An extremely interesting error that we have not seen before! The obverse was struck AT LEAST THREE, probably FOUR times, The strikes were offset one after the other with a rotation in between, so that different parts of the legend are read at each offset strike. At the left end you can see part of the simpulum as well. It is hard to believe that this was unintentional, though we don't know the intention of the mint worker. The reverse aside from being off center was hardly affected. Quite UNUSUAL, and for the specialist collection.
