"COIN OF THE MONTH" - PHILISTIA AR MA'AH (OBOL)
Gitler & Tal XV.3O, Sofaer--, Extremely Fine, obverse struck with worn die, 10.7mm, .67 gram, Struck Circa. 5th - 4th Century B.C.E.
Obverse: Lion crouching to right, before crenelated city wall with three towers in background; waves below
Reverse: Male figure standing to right, restraining horse by holding its reins in his left hand, whip in right hand, border of dots, within incuse square
A RARE Philistian Ma'ah type, probably the first we have handled, struck on a nice broad flan for an obol. The reverse is absolutely EXCEPTIONAL and no doubt one of the finest known. We could not find a better example to have been offered on the market.
