COIN OF THE MONTH - HEZEKIAH HAPECHA AR YEHUD, 1/2 MA'AH (OBOL)
Hendin 6069 (GBC5 1069), About Extremely Fine, 7.1mm, .21 gram, Struck Circa. 330 - 306 B.C.E., Macedonian period
Obverse: Facing head in a circle of connecting dots
Reverse: Inscription YECHEZKIAH HaPECHA (HEZEKIA THE GOVERNOR) in Paleo-Hebrew to the sides of owl standing right, head facing. The feathers of the head form a beaded circle.
A NICE and BOLD representation of the face which is often missing or very off-struck on these coins. The photo of this tiny coin is greatly enlarged, thus difficult to photograph. To us, a bit lighter in hand with great eye appeal!
The word Hapecha is the word that the Bible uses when refering to a governor appointed during the Persian period in Judaea and apparently continued during the reign of Alexander the Great. A rare and intriguing coin from the time of Shimon HaTzaddik (Simeon the Just).
