Yazdegard II persecuted both Christians and his Jewish citizens. R' Sherira Gaon states that he decreed to annul the Sabbath and when the sages prayed for mercy and a "snake" swallowed him. Commentators write that the "snake" is an allusion to a conspircacy which resulted in his assassination
Sassania is the land of Bavel where the Talmud was redacted.
