TRIPOLIS, PHOENICIA HADRIAN AE
SNG Cop. -, BMC 57, Choice VF, 18.8mm, 5.43 grams, Struck 117 C.E.
Obverse: Laureate, slightly draped bust of Hadrian to right, inscription around
Reverse: Nike standing to left on galley, holding wreath in right hand and palm branch in left, date HKY (428 = 117 C.E.) in left field.
A VERY SCARCE even rare type for Hadrian from the beginning of his reign. The coin is perfectly centered and a really CHOICE example. Nicer than any specimen we could find to have sold at auction.
TRIPOLIS was a major crossroad city in Phoenicia. Tripolis - literally "3 cities" was comprised of Tyrians, Sidonians and Aradians.
