SHIMON BAR KOCHBA AE MEDIUM DENOMINATION, YEAR TWO 133/134 C.E.
Mildenberg 74, Good Very Fine, repatinated, 24.4mm, 12.05 grams
Obverse: Vine leaf on tendril, Year Two of the Freedom of Israel in Paleo-Hebrew around
Reverse: Seven branched palm tree with two bunches of dates, Sh'ma (abbreviation of Shimon) in Paleo-Hebrew across fields
A nice and weighty example of a scarcer palm tree dated type with the "Shin Mem Ayin" initials. Scholars hypothesize that Bar Kochba purposely used these initials of his name because they spell out "Shma" - the call to the Jewish people, which exhorts - Hear O' Israel the Lord our G-d, the Lord is one". This specimen also shows almost all the letters including the date on the reverse!
