RAPHIA OF THE DECAPOLIS, ELAGABALUS AE

Sofaer 43, Spijkerman 46, SNG ANS 1398, Fine, 22.4mm, 13.79 grams, Dated year 304 = 244/245 C.E.

Obverse: Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip to right, inscription around

Reverse: Leto seated to left, hand on scepter and on small figure of Apollo; behind her Artemis holding bow and drawing arrow from quiver, inscription and date around

A VERY RARE Biblical city coin never found in a great state, we have not seen a VF example ever. Soafer notes that the coins of Raphia were "poorly manufactured, as one might expect from a small township". All things considered, a pretty nice example for this city and quite heavy for the type!

Ex: Nussbaum collection, NY. Purchased from Liderman, Tel Aviv, Israel, January 1985. Conserved by David Hendin, Amphora Coins.
