PTOLEMY II PHILADELPHOS AR TETRADRACHM, 254/253 B.C.E.

Svoronos 776, About Extremely Fine, small scratch near date on reverse, 27.5mm, 14.13 grams

Obverse: Diademed head of Ptolemy I to right, wearing aegis around neck

Reverse: Eagle standing to left on thunderbolt, ΠT monogram above ΛΕ monogram in left field, date ΛB  (32 = 254/253 B.C.E.) over Θ in right, ΠTOΛEMAIOY ΣΩTHPOΣ around

Somewhat unusual obverse style suggests that this coin may have been struck at another local mint, imitating the Ake issue. LOVELY eye appeal!

Ptolemy II is the king who commissioned 70 Jewish elders to translate the Torah in a work known as the Septuagint.
