JERUSALEM - RITUALLY PURE LIMESTONE CUP OF THE SECOND TEMPLE PERIOD

7.62cm height (approx 3 inches), 84.7cm diameter rim to handle (3 1/3 inches), 68.3cm diameter (near 2 3/4 inches) excluding handle. Light repair around rim and top of handle. Almost entirely original and very good condition . Additional photos at bottom.

This type of cup was manufactured for the exclusive use of priests and ascetics who maintained constant ritual purity. The type was found in the burnt house of the Second Temple period old city of Jerusalem, which belonged to an important priest, the house of "Katros". Priests were required to maintain ritual purity at all times. Since stone vessels (unlike metal and pottery) cannot be defiled they preferred their use. The cups of this type were manufactured in and around Jerusalem from local limestone.

The cup (like most of the others that have been found) was still unfinished, indicating that work may have ceased because of the war against Rome.
