1ST TEMPLE PERIOD ZOOMORPHIC SILVER HACKSILVER WEIGHT, EIN GEDI TYPE, 8th - 6th CENTURIES B.C.E.
See Encylopedia of the Holy Land, Avi-Yonah, Vol 2. P 374.14, Hendin ASW #5, 10+mm length, 2.25 Grams, 4 Gerah
A RARE and interesting ingot of the First Temple period. Hendin classifies this type as hacksilver (currency) as similar were found in Ein Gedi with unformed hacksilver. Though zoomorphic weights are well known, they typically manufactured of bronze. There is little doubt that this ingot being made out of silver was used as currency as well, probably serving a dual role.
