COPONIUS AE PRUTAH, PREFECT UNDER AUGUSTUS
Hendin 1328, Very Fine, 14.8mm, 1.25 grams, Struck Circa. 5/6 C.E.
Obverse: KAICAPOC (of Caesar) around ear of grain curved to right
Reverse: Eight Branched palm tree bearing two bunches of dates, flanked by date (year 36 = 5/6 C.E.)
Off center but a CLEAR date for a prutah of this ruler!
Coponius is the SCARCEST ruler of all the Judean prefects/procurators. Unfortunately many or most examples do not have the last numeral in the date visible so that the more common Ambibulus coins are frequently erroneously attributed to Coponius.
