"COIN OF THE MONTH" - SAMARIA AR 1/4 MA'AH (QUARTER OBOL)
MQ 184, About Extremely Fine, 8.2mm, .21 gram, Struck Circa. 4th Centruy B.C.E.
Obverse: Small head of Athena to right, within circle of dots
Reverse: Head of Hera or Aphrodite to right, wearing radiate crown, within circle of dots.
An EXCEEDINGLY RARE coin, with zero specimens in acsearch. High grade, better than the plate coin in Samarian Coinage, and likely the finest example known!
Not only is the strike amazingly strong and attractive but the motifs are also PERFECTLY centered with the full borders on BOTH obverse and reverse. This is rarely ever seen, especially on the denomination of 1/4 ma'ah. Apparently the authors of the book did not realize that this small denomination, like the larger ones, was engraved with a dotted border; the only difference being the omission of the lily-headed scepter.
