"COIN OF THE MONTH", PHILIPPOPOLIS OF THE DECAPOLIS, PHILIP I AE
Sofaer 3, Spijkerman 5, Choice VF+, 28mm, 16.50 grams, 244 - 249 C.E.
Obverse: AΥTTOK K M IOΥΛIΦIΛIΠΠOC CEB around laureate and draped bust of Philip I to right
Reverse: Roma seated to left on shield, holding spear and eagle supporting two figures, S C across fields, ΦIΛIΠΠOΠOΛITΩN KOΛΩNIAC around
A coin which was quite rare years ago, but of which more examples have come to market in the last decade. Still scarce and the FINEST example by far that we have seen. Well struck, with almost perfect roundness, and a CLEAR, FULL inscription and FAR BETTER than the plate coin representatives in GBC or in Sofaer!
Ex: Palm Desert Collection, 1970's to early 1990's
Ex: Amphora coins with an early Hendin tag (Circa. 1980's) and marked at $1800 !! (See inset photo. This was quite rare at the time and an outstanding example)
