"COIN OF THE MONTH" - FIRST REVOLT JEWISH WAR AE QUARTER SHEKEL, YEAR 4 - 69/70 C.E.
Hendin 1368, TJC 213, Very Fine, stable patina, added contrast, 22.6mm, 7.44 grams, Jerusalem Mint
Obverse: Two lulavim (palm branches with myrtle and willow branches), SH'NAT ARBA REVA (year four, quarter) in paleo-Hebrew script around
Reverse: Etrog (citron), L'GEULAT ZION (for the redemption of Zion) in paleo-Hebrew script around
Surfaces are decent though not choice. The story here is the centering of the coin with wide margins and the COMPLETENESS of the inscription, features often not attainable with this coin and especially at this price point. This coin was struck in the year before the destruction of the 2nd Temple in Jerusalem. Perhaps the most underrated rarity of the War Series, it is apparently rarer even than the silver shekels with probably only a few hundred (if that many) in existence.
