Product Description

PHILADELPHIA OF THE DECAPOLIS, ELAGABALUS AE

Sofaer 43, Spijkerman 46, SNG ANS 1398, Good Fine, 20.9mm, 5.56 grams

Obverse: Laureate and cuirassed bust of Elagabalus to right, inscription around

Reverse: Chariot with domed canopy supported by four pillars drawn to right by four horses, club of Herakles countermark above the horses

Nicely centered and a harder to find type with an interesting reverse!

Note: I have not seen this noted anywhere, but the countermark is quite unusual. I checked Sofaer, Spijkerman, Rosenberger and ANS all who have examples of this coin in addition to a couple of coins that I have been able to find having been offered on the market. In EVERY case the countermark was present and placed in the exact same spot. Apparently, no coins were released for Elagabalus from the mint without the "added" club. Why?..........
