An important artifact rarely offered on the public market, these Jerusalem weights are the weights that were actually used in the markets around the temple in Jerusalem during the lifetime of Jesus. They are cookie shaped, round and quite thick. We note that the book about Judaean weights, Hendin's "Ancient Scale Weights" lists only five examples in a collection of 460 various weights. Similarly the recent group of Judaean weights sold in the New York sale (see here) only had two Herodian pieces. They are the first we have offered since commencing sales in 2003.

This is a particularly interesting piece in that the original carved weight was not as its carvers intended so they drilled out some of the stone and inserted a lead plug to bring the stone up to their desired weight.

There still are a few more pieces we have not listed, and we can offer a discount of 10% if three or more units are purchased.

The weights we are offering have been part of the Cohen collection for over 50 years. They were originally found in the Old City of Jerusalem during the late Ottoman - British Mandate period and collected by the Meryon family. Many of them have markings of collection numbers, find locations or other information from decades ago. But as much (but not all) of these writings are in pencil, they are hard to decipher.
