Product Description

Sofaer 33, Meshorer 37, Good Very Fine, 25.3mm, 12.13 grams, Struck 116/117 C.E.

Obverse: Draped, cuirassed and laureate bust of Hadrian to right, ΑΥΤΟ ΤΡΑ ΑΔΡΙΑΝΩ ΚΑΙС around

Reverse: Laureate head of Doros to right, aphlaston in right field, ΔΩΡ ΙЄΡ ΑСΥΛ ΑΥΤ ΝΑΥΑΡ around, date ΠP (yr. 180 = 116/117 C.E) below

A captivating example with a natural multicolored patina! For this type this is a FINE STYLE of style of Hadrian's bust approaching Imperial standards. Most of the coins have a more provincial style more in sync with those portraits of Hadrian produced in Tiberias. Interestingly, of all the specimens we had found in the auctions, ALL (except perhaps one) had been cleaned and repatinated. This is only the first or second example we see that is fully original.

Dora is the Biblical City of Dor, about 12 km north of Caesarea.
