Product Description

DEMETRIOS II REIGN AR DIDRACHM (HALF SHEKEL)

SNG Spaer 2262, SC 2196.5, Very Fine, 22mm, 6.87 grams, Struck 126/125 B.C.E.

Obverse:  Diademed head of Demetrios II to right

Reverse: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΔHMHTPIOY around eagle standing left on prow left, with palm frond behind, club surmounted by monogram to left, ZΠP (date year 187 = 126/125 B.C.E.) to right, ZB monogram between legs

A nice didrachm equivalent to the autonomous half shekel struck in Tyre. These preceded the famous half shekel of Tyre, were struck in the same mints, and hoard evidence bears out that they were used contemporaneously.

The date on this coin is the very last issue of Demetrios which crosses over to the first year autonomous Tyre half shekels also bearing the same date. In this year Demetrios was defeated by Alexander Zabinas and after being rebuffed by Cleopatra at Ptolemais was killed in Tyre. Tyre immediately started striking their own half shekels autonomously, substituting the portrait of the King for Ba'al Melqart, and changing the legend on the reverse to refer to the city instead of the ruler. The lower monogram, still the same, was shifted to the right.

Ex: Nussbaum collection, NY. Purchased from Dyer T., 1981
