Product Description

COIN OF THE MONTH - TRAJAN DECIUS, CAESAREA MARITIMA AE, "PORTVS AVGVSTI"

Sofaer 118, Kadman 152, Bold GVF, 29.3mm, 20.13 grams, Struck Circa. 249 - 251 C.E.

Obverse: Radiate draped bust of Trajan Decius, IMP CM S Q TRA DECIVS AVG around

Reverse: Imperial war galley sailing to left with four oarsmen, standards and ram, PORTVS AVGVSTI above galley, COL P F AVG C CAES around

Possibly the finest known of few examples! Lovely natural patina. More detail can be brought out especially in the bust, hair, legend and oars if the coin is cleaned but we were not going to touch such a nice specimen of such a rare issue.

A VERY RARE type and one of the very rarest for this city. This large coin depicts the Imperial Galley and one can clearly see four oarsman. The purpose of Caesarea is not to be guessed as the coin loudly and prominently declares "Portus Augusti." Kadman pp. 67, quotes Kubitschek (1911) that Trajan Decius had "perhaps once expressed his hope of coming to the east after winding up of the war on the northern frontiers" Though this visit never happened, apparently this coin was issued to the emperor as an inducement to come, with the caption "PORTVS AVGVSTI"

Attesting to the rarity of the coin, Kadman mentions where it has been published but does not list its presence in any collection. Apparently, neither was this coin represented in the massive Shoshana collection. Sofaer feature one coin, not nearly as nice as ours. And finally I have found ONLY ONE specimen in the auction records, a much poorer example here, that fetched about $750 in 2015.
