Product Description

AR HALF SHEKEL OF TYRE, "TEMPLE TAX"

Hendin 1621, Extremely Fine, hoard patina, some surface scratches, 19.7mm, 6.62 grams

Obverse: Laureate head of Melqart, wearing knotted lionskin around neck

Reverse: Eagle standing left with right foot on prow of ship, palm branch over rt. shoulder, date (109 = 18/17 B.C.E.) and club in field to left, surrounded by inscription "OF TYRE THE HOLY AND INVIOLABLE", KP in right field

A Historic Temple tax coin that is VERY SHARP on BOTH obverse and reverse, with nice style and excellent eye appeal. Some shallow surface scratches make coin very affordable!

The  Silver of Tyre were the purest in the world at 97% - 99% silver and were thus the only coins accepted for the payment of the Temple Tax in Jerusalem. The coins bearing the "KP" monogram (this type) were postulated by Y. Meshorer to have been minted in Jerusalem. Some contemporary scholars disagree and place the location at different mints either in Phoenicia or Israel.
